Rudy y Los Boys
Listen – Question Mark & the Mysterians – 8 Teen – MP3
Greetings all.
Heidely Ho Iron Leggers!
How’s by you?
I thought that after that big lump of pseudo-sophistication last the week, that we were all entitled to a little bit of dopey, fuzzy garage, courtesy of our friend Rudy Martinez (aka Question Mark) and his pals the Mysterians.
I’ve gone on in this space about my love for Question Mark and the boys, and I return to you today with what can only be described as a demented bit of teen angst, veritably a pair of wraparound shades and a sneer converted into ones and zeros for the downloading and the listening and the what not.
The concept of ‘stoopidity’ is crucial to the very best garage punk, and Question Mark had it in spades. Despite what some doctoral candidate with a hard on for pop culture might try to convince you of, there is precious little going on in the music of Question Mark and the Mysterians that can’t be traced back to bad attitudes, boners, and low rent electronics. It’s all about the hand clapping, the foot shuffling, the hair tossing and the back-alley slap and tickle, with – on a good day – a solid dose of basement brewed psychedelic chemistry.
‘8 Teen’ has all of the above, as well as a brain-bendingly obtuse chorus that sounds like the band wrote it on the way to the studio with a snoot full.
I had eighteen arms to hold you
I had eighteen lips to kiss you
I had eighteen ways to love you
And still I’m wonderin’ why you left me
Eighteen lips? What the fuck? I know why she left you pal. You’re an eighteen-armed freak of nature.
We still love you Rudy.
Peace
Larry
