Listen/Download – Paul and Barry Ryan – I Can’t Make Your Way
Welcome to another week here at Iron Leg.
The tune I bring you today is a cut from one of my favorite digging finds.
Back in the day, I had become acquainted with the sounds of Paul and Barry Ryan through the many mixtapes prepared by my UK sounds guru, Mr Luther.
Tunes like the very groovy ‘Keep It Out of Sight’ cemented the twin singers in my mind, so when I happened upon their 1967 Decca LP ‘The Ryans’ at a local record show, I forked over a ten-spot and took it home.
Good thing too, since the album contained my (now) longtime fave bit of freakbeat-ery ‘Hey Mr. Wise Man’ as well as a number of interesting covers (including tunes by the Hollies and the Pretty Things).
The cut I bring you today is a fairly close reading of the Yardbirds ‘Roger the Engineer’ cut ‘I Can’t Make Your Way’.
Though the tune is very cool on its own merits, what I find intriguing is the lead guitar line.
Played by Jeff Beck on the Yardbirds original, the playing on the Ryan’s version is very cool indeed, so much so that I wonder (based on nothing more than a hunch) if it is Beck (or his buddy Mr Page) himself playing it here.
I haven’t been able to track down any session info, so if any of you know for sure who is bending the strings, please let me know.
It wasn’t long after this album that Paul Ryan retired from the act to write songs, with Barry continuing as a solo act. He had a hit with ‘Eloise’ in 1968, a song that would later go on to be covered by the Damned.
Ihope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all next week.
