A brief note before we start: The 2019 Pledge Drive has begun. If you dig what we do here at Iron Leg or over at Funky16Corners, whether it be the individual blog posts, the live radio shows or the mix archives, please consider clicking on the Patreon link and signing up for a small, recurring monthly donation to help keep the lights on around here (server space/bandwidth/broadcast fees).
Any thing you can contribute is greatly appreciated.
Today’s selection is a very tasty bit of psychedelia from the little known but excellent post-Raiders chapters of Drake Levin, Phil Volk and Mike Smith.
Breaking off from Paul Revere and company in 1967, the three ex-Raiders kept busy musically, with Drake Levin recording one excellent 45 as dRake (On The Road to Mexico) and then forming the group Brotherhood (with Smith, Volk and keyboardist Ron Collins).
Brotherhood would record three albums over the next few years, two under that name and another (much more far out) under the name of Friendsound.
The first Brotherhood album, from 1968 is a fine collection of pop and popsike sounds that ought to have caught on but was likely lost in the tsunami of high quality music coming out at the time.
Today’s selection, ‘Jump Out the Window’ is my fave from the album, with a wild, trippy vibe (and slightly humorous) vibe.
Written by Smith, Volk and Levin, along with Chris Etheridge (bassist for the Flying Burrito Brothers, who also appeared on the Friendsound album), the song incorporates heavy guitar, Moog synthesizer and lysergically-inspired lyrics about taking flight (“I’m a hip Mary Poppins!”).
The rest of the album is excellent, and a testament to why these cats had to leave the Raiders and spread their wings. As much as I dig Paul Revere and the Raiders, they never seemed capable (or would likely allow) anything as far out as the best tracks on the Brotherhood album.
I hope you dig the track and I’ll see you all next week.
